Sample writing

Both the reading passage and the lecture focus on the protection of tortoises. The author indicates three possible ways while the lecturer holds the opposite view, challenging the suggestions made in the reading passage.

The first suggestion raised by the author is to protect the environment where the tortoises live in by protecting long leaf tress and reducing man-made pollution to a great extent. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this by saying that such protection won’t work since man-made destruction is only a small part, and there are many other threats in the environment, such as the forest fire.

The second method put forward by the author is artificial feeding. The author suggests that tortoises, especially those who are ill, can be brought back to research centers where they may have better treatment. When they recover, they can be released to nature again. However, the lecturer casts doubt on this idea by claiming that such tortoises will have difficulty adapting the wild life. What’s worse, if the sick tortoises haven’t recovered completely, they will bring the virus to other tortoises.

The last way the author states is that we can pick some tortoises to other environment which is more suitable for them to live in. The lecturer takes a pretty strong stand of opposing it by claiming that tortoises prefer to stay at one particular place. If they are brought to other places, they will try their best to go home. No wonder, there will be more dangers and risks on their way home.

To sum up, the author contends three ways to protect the tortoises, while the lecturer votes against them due to the disadvantages and potential risks they may cause.

self-actualization

also self-actualisation BrE n [U]
when someone achieves what they want through work or in their personal life

Sample writing

Given the choice between a job with more vacation time but a low salary and a job with high salary but less vacation time, I would definitely choose the former since the vacation time is such an indispensable time that I can share with my family and friends and obtain the real happiness from my routine life.

Time is the greatest investment I can make into the relationships with my family and friends. A lower-paying job with more vacation time will give me more opportunity to be with the person I love. Listening to their problems, talking about my own worries or even just sitting beside them can give me strength and show me a more fulfilling life. I can obtain a sense of satisfaction and joy. Besides, a trip during the vacation time is such a good medicine that frees me from the pressure in my routine life and brings me new ideas and brilliant thoughts of life. Visiting different places and talking with different people show various colorful aspects of life; climbing a big mountain or hiking in the hills make me strong and keep me in shape.

On the other hand, high-paying jobs with less vacation time often place too much stress on people, hurting them both physically and mentally. Although higher salary can improve a person’s standard of living: putting better food on the table or wearing elegant clothes, money cannot buy health. News that young elites died due to working overtime is not just heartbreaking but alarming. Also, jobs with high salary and less vacation time tend to make people become materialistic and calculating. In order to get a higher salary, one might spend all his or her time working. There was a famous case of the CEO of a large corporation who, of course, earned a very high salary. He ended his own life because of depression. He felt lonely and unhappy because he worked all day long and had no friends at all.

The Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory indicates that self-actualization is the highest hierarchy in all needs. A job with more vacation time but a low salary can not only secure our basic needs but also provide us with time to fulfill our lives. For me, this is absolutely a better choice.
