WRITING SECTION

Integrated writing task

Topic discussed: argentavis magnificens是古代的largest的鸟(记录应该到现在也没破)讨论是不是会飞的问题

Note

Reading:

Lecture: Marsupial

Sample answer

Scientists have totally changed our world. Thanks to their discoveries and inventions, our life now is more comfortable and convenient. However, at the same time, some discoveries and inventions like pesticide, nuclear weapon and genetically modified food are bringing us serious problems. Consequently ,some people claim that scientists are supposed to be responsible for the negative impacts brought about by their discoveries and inventions. Personally, I disagree with their view.

On the one hand, for most scientists, their original intention is to benefit human beings when they make discoveries and inventions. For example, when chemical scientists invented pesticide, their intention is to help farmers kill insects effectively and increase crop and vegetable yields. They have no idea that the massive use of pesticides would give rise to serious ecological problems. When nuclear scientists discovered nuclear weapon, they just want to find a new way to help human produce more electricity.  No one wants to use nuclear weapon to destroy this world. When biologists changed the genes of certain plants, they just want to get bigger and better fruits in order to meet the demand of all people. I am sure they did not know genetically modified food is a hidden danger for our health.

On the other hand, if we punish scientists for the negative impacts of their inventions and discoveries, we would wipe out their enthusiasm for scientific research. Many scientists are now doing research on clone. Clone can help us cure many diseases. When there is something wrong with a patient’s organ, we can use cloning technology to produce a new organ and replace the old one. However, this would be shrouded in chaos. In order to avoid these problems, should we stop scientists from doing research and punish them? If we did, many diseases would never be cured. Besides, scientists in many other fields would feel over cautious and dare not doing research. If we blame scientists for their achievements, the society would be stagnant because science and technology are the driving force of society.

From what I have discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that scientists should not be responsible for the negative impacts of their discoveries and inventions for the good of mankind and human society.
