Students usually make friends through various ways, such as joining
a sports team, participating in community activities or travelling. Some
genuine friendship is formed in the interaction. But given the best approach
to making friends, participating in community activities outshines the
Sports can guarantee that friends share a common hobby, some people
might argue, but that is not all about friendship. Admittedly, many people get
to know each other due to their similar interest. However, the further
development of the relationship is based on many other aspects including
personal characters, capabilities and so forth, which sports cannot tell.
Moreover, their circle of friends will be narrowed if students give too much
weight to sports when selecting friends. For instance, a boy in a basketball
team can hardly find a friend who prefers soccer or at least who is of the
opposite sex, while it is possible for him to meet different people in community
Compared with sports, travelling seems to be better. Making friends on the
road has several advantages. Travelling provides a wider range of choice. Also,
students can observe the travelling companions from their daily behaviors in a
much more comprehensive way. Despite all those benefits, how to stay in touch
becomes a problem. It is quite likely that they will never see most of those
people again on account of different living or working environment. After all,
travelling is far from life whilst community activities are close to it.
Consequently, I regard community activities as the best of the three
options. Firstly, students can meet a variety of people in community activities.
Secondly, they are able to get fully aware of each other while working towards a
common goal. Thirdly, since the activities are held in communities, it is easy for
them to forge bonds.
There is no doubt that joining a sports team and travelling can both be
advantageous in making friends. Yet participating in community activities
is more efficient and effective, and that makes it the best from my point of
