Topic discussed:

Notes

Reading:

不存在

Caps

Lecture: Marsupial

存在

Glossary

Hive

Do you agree or disagree: young people today are less dependent on their parents

thanin the past.

Sample answer

As the world is developing constantly, the dynamic of our society is also changing accordingly. Although parents continue to be a constant source of support for their children, the current social trends indicate that today’s youth are more independent than their previous generations.

First, the advancement of science and technology ensures children’s independence, especially from an early age. For instance, parents used to accompany and look after their children when there were no cell phones. While the situation has changed nowadays. With a click of their phones, parents can easily know where their children are. Technology relieves parents’ worries as their children can contact them when meeting with troubles. Thus, more freedom has been given to children.

Moreover, globalization has created a generation of internationally minded youth, who are willing to explore the unknown and navigate themselves in this world. Compared to our parents’ generation, young people studying and working abroad is much more common today. Youth look beyond the comfort to seek for better opportunities in large cities at home and abroad. Learning about the world and exploring it personally have made young people more independent.

Admittedly, there are a lot of children who are still depending on their parents, but it does not mean that if they had a chance to see a different world, they would refuse to move a step. At least, children today have got a more independent mind.

Every parent will certainly support their children if the help is needed, but blazing one’s own trail and being able to live independently is essential for children to obtain success in their future life, Self-reliance is the thing society applauds. This combined with the independence that the technology and globalization of society has created a generation of youth today that are less dependent on their parents than in the past.

Topic discussed:

Notes

Reading:

有好处

Lecture: Marsupial

没好处

Glossary

Agricultural subsidies

Essay question

Younger school children (aged from five to ten) should be required to study art

and music in addition to math, language, science and history.

Sample answer

Nowadays, we have attached great importance to the core subjects of math, language, science, and history as they are parts of the standardized testing in our society. Arts education often falls by the wayside. But exploring art and music are as beneficial for a child’s development as studying the main subjects.

First of all, studying art and music encourages creative thinking. The key is in balancing structured learning with unstructured periods of exploration. Students need to be taught certain skills that allow them to express themselves more clearly, and then be given free rein to speak out their thoughts.  Unconventional associations can inspire students so that they are able to come up with novel and interesting ideas. When they start working in the real world, they can make notable contributions to society.

Moreover, studying arts aids in emotional development. Art and music provide perfect platforms for children to express their thoughts and feelings. Based on that, researchers are currently experimenting with art and music for therapeutic purposes. Initial studies show that art therapy is of significant effect for addressing emotional issues.

Last but not least, intense involvement in art and music helps students develop an exquisite taste in beauty, and this will shape them into better developed people. This is not to say that a subject like math doesn’t contain beauty, but beauty is experienced much more frequently and directly in arts. This direct exposure will make them more likely to appreciate life, and recognize the importance of protecting these things from destruction.

It’s a shame that art and music have not obtained the attention they deserve, as their contributions are both numerous and immense. It not only breeds creativity, but also facilitates healthier emotional lives and cultivates more conscientious people. Hence, conclusion can be drawn that younger school children should be required to study art and music in addition to math, language, science and history.
