As there are significant changes taken place in our social structure, an increasing number of people are inclined to move to a new city or a new country in pursuit of opportunities. From my opinion, it is valuable experience to start a brand-new life in a new place. Although some people may hold a negative attitude due to the possibility of losing old friends, it is actually senseless to be so pessimistic.
First of all, moving to a new place does not necessarily mean the loss of old friends. Thanks to modern technology, keeping in touch with a friend across the ocean is no longer beyond reach. With webcam and microphone, every facial expression and tone of speech can be delivered just as a face-to-face meeting. Using Skype, Twitter or Facebook, we still can catch up with old friends through the marvelous internet. After all, distance will not separate genuine friends.
Secondly, even old friends drift apart, it is still a good thing to move to a new place. Since one is no longer in his familiar environment, he must cross the boundaries to develop new friend circles, which is of great help in exercising his communication skills. A new living space will provide one with great opportunities to make new friends from diverse social background but sharing the same interest.
Thirdly, a new living environment also creates a new way of living. The exotic cultures and customs offer an individual great experience that couldn't possibly be available otherwise. Also, a new environment helps an individual to discover his inner strength and obtain a deeper insight. Take Thoreau, the noted writer, for instance, he once moved to Walden to concentrate and get himself working on his writing. Away from familiar environment and acquaintances, he embarked on a two-year experiment in simple living and finally published the celebrated Walden.
Admittedly, moving to a new place may sometimes be unpleasant, but it is a result of inability to adapt to new surroundings rather than the loss of old friends. All in all, with the help of modern technology, moving to a new place doesn’t mean compromising friendship but will bring benefits of building up an extensive social network and broadening one’s life experience instead.
