I call still recall the old days that during family union how my grandparents made all the delicious food for me. The taste of handmade dumplings and the sheer moments of joy seems somewhat distanced from our daily life. And admittedly, the societal changes and technological advances have revolutionized and changed the way people regard and cook food. With one or two decades, I believe there will be fewer people spend their time on cooking.
The first reason the invention and most critically the popularization of electric appliances in the kitchen. Household products such as refrigerators have made food storage more convenient. People can purchase a wide array of frozen food from supermarkets or local convenience stores and put them into fridges. Optimum temperature can also be set in case of food spoilage. Many more cookers such as blenders and microwave ovens have also simplified the food preparation and cooking process.
Another point to note is the ubiquitous chain restaurants around neighborhood. The most accessible one is fast food restaurants like Burger King and McDonald. Despite the potential risk of obesity and diabetes, these kinds of food do offer one kind of advantage- convenience. More upscale restaurants include Chinese cuisine and French food. Dishes served in these restaurants offer not only a glimpse of the foreign culture but a feast to one’s tongue.
What’s more, the fast-paced urban life and increasingly competitive and tough job market shall also contribute to the shift in people’s cooking preference. With more and more companies are considering downsizing their employees during the global economic downturn, the current workers will have to strive for good performance at work, not to mention those who are ambitious enough to look for a promotion and salary increment. While the adults and parents in the family are preoccupied with their career, it seems not surprising that few nowadays are willing to cook themselves.
Therefore, I believe that it is inevitable that within two decades people will spend les time on cooking food.
