The Dragon-boat Festival

                                                        by 5级班 Ivy

Do you remember the day when we ate Zongtze with our family? Do you remember how excited we were when watching the dragon boat race? Do you remember....... However, have you ever considered why we should celebrate this day?

As early as 2000 years ago, about the Spring and Autumn Period, China had set the Dragon-boat Festival in memory of a great poet called Qu Yuan, who was also a great patriot. The time will be each May 5th according to the lunar calendar.

There is a story that goes, Qu Yuan, a minister of Empire Chu in the Spring and Autumn Period. He recommended virtuous and talented people, making the country prosperous and its military force powerful. What he advocated is to unite Qi State and to fight against Qin State. Unfortunately, some nobles objected to his ideas. As a result, he was removed from the political office, dislodged from the capital, banished to remote areas.

While in exile, he wrote many patriotic poems such as "Li Sao", "Jiu Ge","Tian Wen", which remain immortal and well-known to every family from generation to generation. In 278 B.C. Qin conquered the capital of Chu State. So heart- broken was Qu Yuan that he jumped into the Mi Luo River after writing his swan song "Huai Sha". Then his spirit of patriotism went to posterity.

After the death of Qu Yuan, civilians of Chu all went to Mi Luo River to mourn, throwing rice rolls and some other food into the river.

As time goes by, the date of Qu Yuan's death has become a festival. On top of this, the way people memorize their hero has become a custom too. For instance, eating Zongtze, rowing dragon boats, wearing sachets, hanging aytsao and calamus, etc.

From my point of viewm the spirit of patriotism should be anchored in each Chinese heart. So we worship Qu Yuan. However, these days, something we can't tolerate happened. Koreans stole our precious wealth ---danoje. Their shameful behavior. won't be forgiven by Chinese. As far as I am concerned, China government shouldn't submit. They should argue strongly on just grounds and make every effort to persist, retaking our rights.

We can never fail to live up to our ancestors' anticipation---love our motherland!
