The media circus which follows Diego Maradona is never far from a juicy story. This is a man whose trickery（欺骗，花招） on the football field devastated opponents. But his playing career was blighted by doping bans（1994年世界杯因服用兴奋剂被罚15个月的禁赛）and infamous 'hand of God' goal (1986年首演“上帝之手”进球)against England in a World Cup quarter-final.

After he retired Maradona suffered from drug addiction, ill health and weight gain. He became coach of Argentina with virtually no managerial experience. In his 19 months in charge he's tried out more than a hundred different players. Since then he was admitted to hospital after being bitten in the face by his pet dog. On his way to announce his World Cup squad, the car he was driving ran over a photographer. And he's promised to run naked through the centre of Buenos Aires if Argentina win the World Cup. It might not happen, but following Argentina shouldn't be boring.

1．    Juicy, 原意是“多汁的，汁液丰富的”，在这里解释为“(提供丑闻等消息而)有趣的,富于刺激性的”。比如a juicy bit of gossip, 绘声绘色的小道消息。

2．    Devastate是从精神上体力上彻底战胜、震慑对手，语气比近义词 “defeat”, “beat” and “vanquish”都要来的强烈。

3．    Blight词的常用义是“摧残，使枯萎”；做名词解释时有个含义为“坏因素，阴影”。马纳多纳的精湛球艺令世界球迷折服，然而他辉煌的playing career也常常被丑闻阴影笼罩，所以这个地方用 “blight”一词，简单达意。

4．    Virtually这个副词常用义为 “实际上”= in effect和“几乎，差不多”=hardly，比如：

l         He was virtually a prisoner.

他实际上是个囚犯。

l         The job was virtually completed by the end of the week.

到周末时这项工作差不多完成了。

5．    Try out 这个词组大家都知道是“试验”或“试用”的意思。例如：We will try out this employee in another department for a while。个人认为，该词组在本文中的最佳翻译为“马纳多纳先后征召了100多名球员”。

另外try out 后面常跟for something, 构成另一固定搭配 “try out for something”, 意思为“竞争参加某个赛事或表演的资格”，比如：I intend to try out for the school play.

6．    本文中seal = secure, 意为“确保，确定，使成定局”。Seal意为“密封，盖章”，有很多常用的短语搭配，如：

    seal someone's fate：注定了某人。。。的结局

l         His lying and cheating sealed his fate. He was convicted and sent to prison.

My lips are sealed=I will keep the secret with me. 我会保密的。

Bob: Don't you dare tell her I told you. Bill: My lips are sealed.

seal something off 封锁（建筑物、入口或通道）

l         The police sealed the building off from everyone 警察封锁了整座大楼。

Seal (up) 决定，敲定。

l         The contract was sealed up just in time.

   Sealed with a kiss/SWAK 充满关爱或爱意的信件

l         All her letters come SWAK

l         All my letters for you are sealed with a kiss. (写情书时常用吧，O(∩_∩)O哈哈~)

seal a bargain and seal the bargain以示或庆祝一项协议或交易的成功。

l         They signed the papers and sealed the bargain by drinking champagne.

7．    Let fly =To lash out; assault: 猛烈抨击，恶劣地进行语言攻击。

比较记忆几个表示“一连串，一系列”的数量词短语;

A trail of footprints 一连串的足迹；a series of days接连几天；a succession of failures 接二连三的失败；a string of oaths 一连串的誓约词

8．    注意介词的使用这个小细节。

如果说某人脸上挨了一拳，应用介词ON：be hit on the face，因为动作接触面是被打人的脸部表面。

而马纳多纳的脸被自己的宠物狗咬了一口送进了医院，该动作接触面就深入面部了，应用介词 IN：be bitten in the face by his pet dog.
