此句不能翻成：他们是这所大学的（部分）学生。如果要表达此意：应该说：They are students of this university.
第一句中的students之前有个the，这个定冠词相当于all the的涵义；第二句中的students之前不用定冠词the，相当于some的涵义。为此，第一句等于：They are all the students of this university. 第二句等于：They are some students of this university.
下面请看例子：
Those ninety persons are the inhabitants of this village.
那九十个人是这个村子的全部居民。
Those ninety persons are inhabitants of this village.
那九十个人是这个村子的（部分）居民。
The pencils produced in that factory are of good quality.
那家工厂生产的铅笔质量都很好。（指所有铅笔，特指）
I like pencils produced in that factory.
我喜欢那家工厂生产的铅笔。（表示类别，泛指）
Three years ago Mr. Smith sent his children to our school, and the two of them are now still studying in our class.
三年前，史密斯先生把他的孩子送到我们学校读书，他的两个孩子还在我们班上学习。

三年前，史密斯先生把他的孩子送到我们学校读书，其中有两个孩子现在还在我们班上学习。
第一句中的two of them之前加了定冠词，表示史密斯先生一共只有两个孩子；第二句中的two of them之前没有定冠词，表示他不止有两个孩子。
为此，我们在平日阅读中，应注意the在句子中的使用和涵义。使比较下列词语的不同涵义：
the white and the black rabbit
两只兔子，一黑一白
the white and black rabbit
一只黑白相间兔子
Where are the secretary and the accountant?
找两个人，一个秘书，一个会计师
Where is the secretary and accountant?
找一个人，他是秘书兼会计师。
所以此句翻译应为：他们是这所大学的全体学生。
