这一句不能翻译为：他们往里向门张望。在英语里，介词的用法要特别注意。
例如，从门口出去（进来）：to go out (come in) at (or through) the door
走后门：to go in by the back door
上个月的账单：the bill for the last month
南山的竹：the bamboos at South Hill
香港的夏天：the summer in Hong Kong
莎士比亚的著作：the works by Shakespeare
作诗的天赋：a talent for writing poetry
博物馆的入口：the entrance to the museum
用法语写得报告：a report in French
这里的介词均不能使用of代替！
同样的，汉语的“他们从门口向屋里张望”，英语翻译为：They look in at the door.这里的at不能改为from。
下面再举几个例子：
I saw him go out at (or through) the gate of the Ocean Park this afternoon.
今天下午我看见他从海洋公园的大门口走出去。
This is a book on Japanese sumo.
I have read Charles Bohlen’s Witness to History.
我已阅读过查尔斯·波伦写的《历史的见证》。
从上面四例课件，第一句用at或through，不用from；第二句用on，不用of；第三局用by，不用of；第四句用to，不用of。
关于介词的用法，还有一点要注意的，就是在某些场合下，介词除了表示其本身固有的涵义外，有时还可以结合上下文表示动词的概念。例如through的原意是“通过”“穿过”，但在the pavilion through the tree这个短语中，他却表示“穿过树林可以望见的亭子”。又如：We are against the war.一句中，against表示动词“反对”的意思。因此此句需要翻译成：我们反对这场战争。
请各位学生仔细阅读下列各句，并注意各介词表达的动词概念：
The great scholar is not above asking questions.
这个大学者不耻下问。
They worked long hours on meager food, in cold huts, by dim candles ….
他们长时间地工作，吃得又少又差，住寒冷的棚屋，靠昏暗的烛光……
We were between the sheets by nine last night.
昨晚九点，我们已睡在被窝里了。
Your report should be before the President at nine tonight.
你们的报告应该在今晚九点呈交给总统。
After all my trouble, your son has learned nothing.
尽管我花了不少精力，你的儿子还是没有学到什么。
所以此句的翻译为：他们从门口向屋里张望。
