 Pants

What it means in the U.S.: Outerwear from the waist to the ankles; trousers. 美式英语：长裤 What it means in the U.K.: Underwear. 英式英语：内裤 Potentially confusing sentence: “Wow, your mom has the nicest pants!” 慎用：哇噢，你妈妈的裤子很赞啊！（如果对方是英国人……呃，这误会估计就大了去了。）

Braces

What it means in the US: Devices for straightening teeth. 美式英语：矫正牙齿的牙套 What it means in the UK: Suspenders. 英式英语：吊裤带 Potentially confusing sentence: “I used to always get food caught in my braces 

as a kid.” 慎用：小时候（整牙），牙套里总是塞食物。（如果对方是英国人……这画面太美，世纪君想象不能。）

Biscuit

What it means in the U.S.: A buttery, flaky bread served with savory meals. 美式英语：软烤饼 What it means in the U.K.: A cookie. 英式英语：饼干 Potentially confusing sentence: “I can’t eat a biscuit unless it’s dripping in gravy.” 慎用：我吃软烤饼一定要加肉汁。（如果对方是英国人……你俨然已经被扣上了“重口味”的帽子啦～）

First floor

What it means in the U.S.: The floor at ground level. 美式英语：一楼 What it means in the U.K.: The floor above the ground level floor. 英式英语：二楼 Potentially confusing sentence: “That super-important meeting is taking place on the first floor — don’t be late!” 慎用：这个会议至关重要，地点在一楼，请务必准时参加。（如果对方是英国人……迷路那简直是一定哒～）

Fancy dress

What it means in the U.S.: Formal attire. 美式英语：礼服 What it means in the U.K.: Costume. 英式英语：戏服 Potentially confusing sentence: “Those girls invited us to a fancy dress party 

tonight. Now where can I get a tuxedo?” 慎用：姑娘们邀请我们参加今晚的化妆舞会，我们该去哪找件晚礼服呢？（如果对方是英国人……那回头率、“惊艳”程度妥妥的！）

Trainers

What it means in the U.S.: A fitness expert who helps you work out. 美式英语：健身教练 What it means in the U.K.: Sneakers. 英式英语：运动鞋 Potentially confusing sentence: “Work out with trainers? What do I look like, a 

millionaire?!” 慎用：请个健身教练？我看起来很像百万富翁嘛？！（如果对方是英国人……恭喜你，一句话就把自己塑造成了连运动鞋都买不起的穷光蛋。）

Chaps

What it means in the U.S.: Leather leggings worn by cowboys designed to protect 

the legs whilst horseback riding. 美式英语：皮套裤（牛仔们骑马时穿着可保护双腿） What it means in the U.K.: Guys. 英式英语：兄弟，朋友们 Potentially confusing 

sentence: “Nothin’ sexier than a pair of assless chaps!” 慎用：没有什么比皮套

裤更性感的啦～（如果对方是英国人……不巧你正是个纯汉子，呃，这可是个大误会呢。）

Comforter

What it means in the U.S.: A quilted bedspread. 美式英语：被子 What it means in the U.K.: A baby’s pacifier. 英式英语：（婴儿用的）安抚奶嘴 Potentially confusing sentence: “I can’t fall asleep without my favorite comforter.” 慎用：没有最喜欢的那床被子我睡不着。（如果对方是英国人……OMG，又是“这画面太美不敢看”……）

Cider

What it means in the U.S.: A nonalcoholic apple juice popular in the fall. 美式英语：苹果汁 What it means in the U.K.: An alcoholic beverage derived from fermented apples,

 popular every season. 英式英语：苹果酒 Potentially confusing sentence: “I used to 

drink cider every day as a kid.” 慎用：小时候我天天喝苹果汁。（如果对方是英国人……苍天，这倒霉孩子打小就是个酒鬼！）

Knob

What it means in the U.S.: A rounded door handle. 美式英语：圆形门把手 What it means

 in the U.K.: A penis. 英式英语：男性生殖器 Potentially confusing sentence: “I broke 

my knob rushing out of the house this morning.” 慎用：今早，我冲出房间时把门把手弄坏了。（如果对方是英国人……Oh, poor man!）

Bin

What it means in the U.S.: A storage container. 美式英语：储藏箱 What it means in the U.K.: A trash can. 英式英语：垃圾桶 Potentially confusing sentence: “I put all my grandmother’s valuables in a bin.” 慎用：我把奶奶所有的值钱物件儿都放到了储物箱里。（如果对方是英国人……这熊孩子跟奶奶有仇吧？）

Rubber

What it means in the US: A condom. 美式英语：避孕套 What it means in the UK: An

 eraser. 英式英语：橡皮 Potentially confusing sentence: “Why on EARTH would 

you give those school 、children rubbers?!” 慎用：你究竟为什么要给学生们发避孕套？！（如果对方是英国人……难道发发橡皮也犯法嘛？！）

Pissed

What it means in the U..S: Angry. 美式英语：怒了 What it means in the U.K.: Drunk. 英式英语：醉了 Potentially confusing sentence: “Sorry that I’m late for work. I got a parking 、ticket and I’m pissed.” 慎用：抱歉我迟到了。我被开了个停车罚单，气死我啦！（如果对方是英国人……没告你酒驾算你走运啦！）

Shag

What it means in the U.S.: Carpeting with particularly long and soft fibers. 美式英语：带长绒的毛毯 What it means in the U.K.: Sex. 英式英语：性行为 Potentially confusing sentence: 

“Shag? Gross. What is this, the ’70s?” 慎用：毛毯？真不怎么样，这是神马玩意儿？！70年代的？（如果对方是英国人……想象不能啊！）

Football

What it means in the U.S.: Football. 美式英语：橄榄球 What it means in the U.K.: Soccer. 英式英语：足球 Potentially confusing sentence: “I don’t like football.” 慎用：我不喜欢橄榄球。（如果对方是英国人……好吧，对方成功误解了你的喜好。）
