1) PAUSE When speaking to the class, use a PAUSE, (stop speaking for a few seconds) to draw attention to the next thing you say. The PAUSE is a very good way to get students to listen carefully to the next thing you say.
2) READ MY LIPS Tell the students that you are going to say one of a group of words (days of the week, months of the year, numbers 1-10, or a list of recent new words). Say the word without making a sound. Students must read your lips and guess the word. Then let students try the same activity in pairs.
3) Teach your students that when they see you fold your arms, they should fold their arms and stop talking. This is the best way to get quiet in the classroom. It’s much better than shouting or banging.
4) For classroom managment with young learners a surprisingly powerful tool to encourage good behaviour is simply to write their name on the board when they misbehave. You can add an unahppy face next to it if you want.
When they behave well then you can rub the name and face off.
Works wonders. It doesn't have to be done too sternly and the face gives it a bit of fun, even though it is a kind of discipline.
