drop作为动词：意为“落下；跌倒；下降；放弃；漏掉”，首先要注意到drop是重度闭音节，过去式过去分词要双写p+ed, drop-dropped-dropped

在Webster字典中的解释为：

vt.  to let (something) fall   

人为造成的下落, 故意的或不故意的：

She dropped the apple core into the trash can.

她把苹果核扔进了垃圾箱。

They dropped bombs on the city.

他们向城市投放炸弹。

He dropped [=lowered] his voice.

他放低了声音。

She dropped [=reduced] her speed when she saw the patrol car.

看到了巡逻车，她降低了车速。

You have dropped an "f" in your spelling of the word "different"

你在拼写different的时候漏掉一个f。（不故意的行为）

在新概念第二册L35中：

The one with the money got such a fright that he dropped the bag and ran away.

带着钱的小偷受到了如此的惊吓以至于扔掉了包逃走了。(故意行为)

在新概念第二册L53中：

A bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to the wires.

一只鸟从地上抓起蛇，然后把它仍在电线上。（非故意行为）

另外有以下固定搭配：

drop sb. a line 写信给某人

= write to sb

vi.  to change to a lower level, amount, position, etc.  

程度、数量、职位等的自动下落

The temperature dropped (to 50 degrees).

温度下降到50度。

His voice dropped [=became quieter] as he told us the secret.

在向我们讲秘密的时候，他的声音放低了。

Increased competition hasn’t caused prices to drop. [=decline, go down]

增长的人口没有造成了物价的下降。

在新概念第二册L86中：

Before long, the noise dropped completely and the boat began to drift gently across the water.

不久，噪音彻底消失了，快艇开始在水面上慢悠悠的漂流。

与fall的区别：

fall在Webster字典中的解释为：

“to come or go down quickly from a high place or position”

See some examples:

An apple fell from the tree. 苹果从树上落下来。

A vase fell off the shelf.  花瓶掉落书架。

Rain fell from the sky. 雨从天降。

She slipped and fell on the ice. 她滑倒了，摔在冰上。

Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders. 她的头发蓬松地披落在肩头。（What a vivid description!）

不难分析，fall与drop第二层含义一致，强调：“自动下落”,而且更多用于“具体事物”，像数量、温度、水平等抽象名词，多采用“drop”这个词。不过今后随着我们知识的进一步扩展，这两个词的用法也会见到互通之处。中学阶段只需辨别出基本差别，并可以顺利完成以下习题即可：

drop作为名词： 翻译为水滴的“滴”，在英语中是个量词

在Webster字典中的解释为：

a very small amount of liquid that falls in a rounded shape

比如水滴、一滴血、一滴雨等。

a drop of …一滴…

a drop of water/blood/ink

一滴水，一滴血，一滴墨水

He squeezed the bottle until a few drops came out.

他一直挤瓶子，知道挤出几滴才放手。

She knew rain was coming when she felt a drop [=raindrop] land on her arm.

他感觉到落在手臂上的雨滴，知道天快下雨了。
