昂立外语【新概念培训】分享cover这个词，这个词是新二Lesson 5 No wrong numbers中出现的词，原文是这样的：“The bird covered the distance in three minutes.” 在这里，cover的意思是越过，走过一段路程。（没有说明使用何种方式越过）那么这句话的意思就是：这只鸟用了三分钟飞完了全程。举个例子：We covered 50 kilometers by car 

yesterday. 我们昨天开车行进了50公里。 

但其实除此之外，cover的用法特别广泛，我们现在来看一看它还有哪些神奇的用法吧~

cover 作为v. 时，有以下这些用法：

①覆盖，遮盖

如：As we’ve seen, oceans cover more than 70% of the earth.

正如我们所知，海洋覆盖地球面积的70%以上。

cover ……with…… 用……把……覆盖

eg: She covered her face with her hands.

她用双手遮住了脸。

The mountain is covered with the snow all year around.

山全年被雪覆盖着。

②掩盖

We all know that lies cannot cover facts.

我们都知道谎言掩盖不了事实。

③看完，读完（多少页）

How many pages have you covered?

你读了多少页了？

④占地面积

cover an area of

The city covers an area of 500 square kilometers.

这座城市占地500平方公里。

⑤报道，采访

cover sth. interview sb.

Who will cover the event?

谁会报道这个事件？

⑦（钱）够……用；足以支付

Will 200 yuan cover the cost of the dinner?

200元足以支付晚餐吗？

⑧包含，包括，涉及

A year covers 12 months. 一年包含12个月。

The talks are expected to cover other topics, too. 会谈估计还会涉及别的话题。

cover 作为n 时，有以下意思：

①封面，盖子，表面

A box usually has a cover. 盒子通常都有盖子。

②（书等的）封面，封皮

The book needs a new cover.

这本书需要装个新封面。

③幌子，伪装

The spy’s cover was that she was a consultant engineer.

那个女间谍拿顾问工程师当幌子。

④掩蔽，掩护

For this operation we need plenty of air cover.

这次军事行动我们需要充足的空中掩护。

词组辨析

be covered with….  被…所覆盖，覆盖着，盖满….

（与自然界有关）

be covered by….   （被动） 由…承担/负担/支付；被…掩护/报道/监视/控制等等，表示抽象的概念，后面接人，机构，或者组织。

（与人的活动有关）

如：

The grass was covered with frost in the early morning.

These expenses are covered by the state.(抽象)
