昂立外语【新概念培训】分享gentle这个词。最近有一部很火的高智商电影Interstellar《星际穿越》不知同学们有没有去电影院观看呢？~
看完这部片子除了对宇宙产生了深深的敬畏外，令老师印象最深的就是反复被念及的一首诗——Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night《不要温和地走进那个良夜》 此诗是英国著名诗人Dylan Thomas的代表作。作于诗人的父亲逝世前的病危期间，整首诗充斥着对“暮年”表现出的大无畏精神。下面请首先来欣赏下这首诗：
Do not go gentle into that good night,
不要温和地走进那个良夜，
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
老年应当在日暮时燃烧咆哮；
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
怒斥，怒斥光明的消逝。
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
虽然智慧的人临终时懂得黑暗有理，
Because their words had forked no lightning they
因为他们的话没有迸发出闪电，他们
Do not go gentle into that good night.
也并不温和地走进那个良夜。
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
善良的人，当最后一浪过去，高呼他们脆弱的善行
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
可能曾会多么光辉地在绿色的海湾里舞蹈，
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
怒斥，怒斥光明的消逝。
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
狂暴的人抓住并歌唱过翱翔的太阳，
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
懂得，但为时太晚，他们使太阳在途中悲伤，
Do not go gentle into that good night.
也并不温和地走进那个良夜。
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
严肃的人，接近死亡，用炫目的视觉看出
在此诗里，gentle这个词反复出现，意为“温和的”。此诗的gentle和我们平时所说的“温柔”不同，有点贬义的意味，虽然“温和”但也意味着无所作为，黯然地接受命运。

gentle最常见的一个衍生词就是gentleman，意为“绅士”

形容人：Someone who is gentle is kind, mild, and calm. 温和的

最后让我们回到Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night这首诗。整首诗旨在激励无论是即将老去、生命即将终止的老人，还是终将老去的年轻人，都要"burn and rave at close of day "，只要如此，""Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay "。也正因此片中的老教授才用此诗给在浩瀚宇宙的绝望而孤独角落奋斗的科学家们，给予信念。生命的意义并不在于其“长度”，而在于其“宽度”，愿亲爱的学生们也能从中有所领悟！
