 今天分享age这个单词，首先先来看一则BBC新闻。

Shift work ages the brain

The damaging effects of shift work(轮班工作) on the body are well known. This study shows the impact on the mind as well.

Three thousand people performed tests of memory and speed of thought. Those with more than ten years of shift work under their belts had the same results as those who didn't do shifts but were six-and-a-half years older.

The good news is that when people in the study stopped shift work their brains did recover(恢复), although it took five years.

夜班工作加速大脑老化

科学家们警告说，长年上夜班可能对人的大脑有害。刊登在《职业与环境医学》期刊上的这项研究发现一个连续上了十年夜班的人大脑老化加速了六年多。

2  这篇文章标题中的age显然不同于以往我们看到的名词形式，这里age作动词，意为“使变老”。

其实age作 “使变老、使成熟”的意思在我们日常生活中经常能见到。最典型的例子就是妈妈用的护肤品，细心的同学可以在瓶身上看到“anti-aging”的字样，意为“抗老化”。如下图：

我的女儿简从未想过会接到荷兰一位同龄姑娘的来信。

2  很显然，在我们新概念二课本中，age都作名词“年龄”的意思。需注意的是age不仅可以表示人的年龄，也可以表示物的年龄。

1.        age  n. 时代  -  an age is a period in history

e.g. The age of steam and steel. 

蒸汽与钢铁时代。

2.        aged 

adj. 年老的  -  aged means very old

e.g. She has an aged parent who's capable of being very difficult.

她有个年迈的、很难伺候的父亲。

n. ...岁的  -  You use aged followed by a number to say how old someone is. 

e.g. Alan has two children, aged eleven and nine.

艾伦有两个孩子，岁数为11岁和9岁。
