昂立外语【新概念培训】分享privilege这个词。privilege一词可以做动词，可以做名词。名词的中文解释是特权，英文释义为a special right or advantage that a particular person or group of people has。也就是只有一部分人才能有的权利叫做privilege。作为动词，基本延续了名词的含义，中文解释为给予……特权，即to give somebody/something special rights or advantages that others do not have。

privilege这一词在新三的课文中也不止一次出现，如 Lesson 4 The double life of Alfred Bloggs中：

Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers.

又如Lesson41 Illusions of Pastoral peace中：

Why people are prepared to tolerate a four hour journey each day for the dubious privilege of living in the country is beyond me.

可见，在新三的课文中privilege的用法均为privilege of doing sth. 也即做某事的特权。

privilege有的时候也可以和honor 一词替换，近似于荣幸，如：

It must be a privilege to know such a man.

认识这样的人肯定很荣幸。

因为privilege表示只有少数人才有的权力，所以很多时候会作为贬义词来使用，特指富人或者上层社会才有的特殊权利和优惠。比如：

Having been born to privilege in old Hollywood, she was carrying on a family tradition by acting.

她出身于过去好莱坞的名门，继承了当演员的家族传统。

The Great Gatsby 刚开头就有一句话说：

I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart.

我不再要参与放浪形骸的游乐，也不再要偶尔窥见人内心深处的荣幸了。

这里的privilege是过去分词作定语，修饰glimpses（瞥见;一瞥）。为什么说窥见人的内心是一种privilege呢，其实这句话之前一大段都在说我特别受那些奇怪的人的信任，所以很多人都会向我倾诉秘密。这句话实则又是和开头“我”父亲说的那句话“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” 是相互辉映的。并不是所有人都有窥探人的内心的权力，从这个意义上说是privilege。而且对于有些人来说，这样的一种“技能”或许也是一种荣幸。仅用privilege这一词就传达出了这种含义。

而当时的“我”不再想要这个privilege，说明我真的是受够了人的道德缺失，使得之后出现的唯一的例外——盖茨比——变得更加珍贵而特别。

特权听上去很高洋上，其实我们每个人多少都会有一些privilege的，比如the privilege of learning English， the privilege of becoming a better person. 正如下面这本书的标题。
