昂立外语【新概念培训】分享 今天分享appetite这个词，相信大家都知道一句法语Bon appetit “祝你有个好胃口”。注意！在法语里为appetit，而在英语里则是appetite。appetite是一个从法语延续到英语里的单词，意为“胃口”。

下面来看个幽默短文：

At a dinner party a shy young man had been trying to think of something nice to say to his hostess.

At last he saw his chance when she turned to him and remarked, "What a small appetite you have tonight, Mr. Jones.

"To sit next to you," he replied gallantly, "would cause any man to lose his appetite."

是不是觉得这故事很熟悉呢？其实这和我们新二里的Lesson40 Food and talk很像，都是餐桌上发生的趣事。

lose appetite 指“失去食欲”，也就是我们常说的“倒胃口”

appetite也出现在Lesson 78 The last one? 中：

I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite.

enormous appetite 巨大的食欲

其实appetite除了指“胃口”这个和吃有关的意思外，还可以指“欲望”

需要注意的是，作“胃口”时为不可数名词，作“欲望”时则为可数名词。

常用搭配有appetite for sth. 对...的欲望

e.g. his appetite for success  他对成功的欲望

分享一段莎翁作品Twelfth Night《第十二夜》里的经典对白：

If music be the food of love, play on;

Give me excess(超额) of it, that, surfeiting(饮食过度),

The appetite may sicken, and so die.

假如音乐是爱情的粮食，那么奏下去吧；

尽量地奏下去，好让爱情因过饱噎塞而死

（这里的appetite指上文提到的love）

最后分享泰戈尔《飞鸟集》里的一句话：

Do not blame your food because you have no appetite.

不要因为你自己没有胃口而去责备你的食物。
