昂立外语【新概念培训】分享sacred这一词。这个词的意思是神圣的。乍一看这个名词可能就会觉得这个词肯定用在和教堂等等有关的地方，但其实这个词可以用的范围很广。

sacred在新三课文里面首次出现是在Lesson 3 An unknown goddess：

In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found.

这里的神圣的，即指宗教上的神圣，不是任何人都能接近的地方。

sacred第二次出现在Lesson 45 The Power of the Press：

Acting on the contention that facts are sacred, reporters can cause untold suffering to individuals by publishing details about their private lives.

前半句话可以翻译成“按照事实至上的观点”，这里的sacred和宗教基本没有关系，就约等于very important。

所以，我们从新概念三册中了解到sacred主要有这样两个含义：

1. connected with God or a god; considered to be holy

e.g. Cows are sacred to Hindus.

牛对于印度教的人来说是神圣的，是不能作为食物的，它们是神的化身。

2. very important and treated with great respect

e.g. For journalists nothing is sacred (= they write about anything).

对于记者来说，没有什么是不能写的。这里的sacred和宗教没有关系，可以理解为就像宗教一样不可随便接近的。

就后面那个意义来说，已经去掉了宗教的意义，所以日常生活中都是可以用到的。

比如The Great Gatsby 中接近结尾的时候有这样一段：

He put his hands in his coat pockets and turned back eagerly to his scrutiny of the house, as though my presence marred the sacredness of the vigil. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight—watching over nothing.

他把两手插在上衣口袋里，热切地掉转身去端详那座房子，仿佛我的在场有损于他神圣的守望。于是我走开了，留下他站在月光里--空守着。

这里sacredness是sacred的名词形式，意思不变。什么叫做the sacredness of the vigil呢？vigil意为守夜，整夜地监视。整个短语翻译为神圣的守望。在小说的这一段，盖茨比和黛西乘坐的车撞死了人，黛西受到了惊吓。于是盖茨比一直不放心黛西，简直要远远地守望着黛西所在的房子。这是怎样的一种爱，是纯洁到几乎不忍沾染的。所以，“我”才会觉得自己最好不要呆在那里，自己的在场是不应该的，就好像一个不信教的人不敢随便踏入教堂一样。

我们从以上的例子中知道了，sacred这一词其实并没有那么sacred。在自己的作文中不妨也试着用用看哦~
