昂立外语【新概念培训】跟大家分享“sink”。sink表示to descend to the bottom,中文译为“下沉”，在新三中用的可谓多频且精彩。譬如第十课中对于Titanic的描述中，甚至还用到了它的两个变身形式：sinking以及unsinkable。

说 到这里不得不提Downton Abbey里的Lord 对于Tatanic这一世纪剧丧的话：Every mountain is un-climb-able until someone climbs it so every ship is unsinkable until it sinks.

读来意味深长，值得玩味。

回到我们的Pride and Prejudice中，看到这样一段文字：

She remembered also, that till the Netherfield family had quitted the country, he had 

told his story to no one but herself; but that after their removal, it had been every 

where discussed; that he had then no reserves, no scruples in sinking Mr. Darcy's 

character, though he had assured her that respect for the father would always prevent 

his exposing the son.

回到语境，整篇都在告诉我们女一号Elizabeth的后悔，她受到另一个朋友的影响，对Darcy先生产生了prejudice，直到后者给她写了很长一 封情意绵绵的信，她才恍然大悟，开始反思过去的点滴，其中就有对于这位朋友过往言论的回忆，于是她回忆起来说这位朋友曾毫无保留(have no reserves)，毫无顾忌(no scruples)对Darcy的品格做出了sink这样的动作。

翻阅词典发现，sink还可以表示：To debase the nature of/ to degrade (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the

English Language, the 4th Edition),译为中文即：“诋毁”。

于是上面一段文字不言而喻，Elizabeth听信了这位先生对于Darcy的不公允的甚至是污蔑性的描述，才会影响了自己的判断。
