compete是不及物动词，与不同的介词搭配体现不同的意义，常见的有：

compete against表示“与…对抗”；

compete for表示“夺取…”；

compete with表示“对…抗争”

He's hoping to compete in the London marathon.

他期盼着参加伦敦马拉松比赛。

Jim competed against the world's best runner in the Games.

在运动会上吉姆与世界最佳赛跑运动员竞争。

Several companies are competing for the contract.

几家公司正为争取一项合同而互相竞争。

We can compete with the best teams.

我们能与最好的队竞争。

此外，compete with还有“匹敌，比得上，媲美”之意，多用于否定句：

e.g. Hugh’s house can’t compete with yours. 休的房子比不上你的。

None of his later books can compete with his first one. 他后来的书没有一本能比得上第一本。
