作为介词，其实above也是我们新概念课本中的常客，下面我们就来追寻它的新概念身影吧~

新2 Lesson 64 The Channel Tunnel

The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level.

这是above的基本含义“at or to a higher place or position than sth/sb”的使用，介词，此处意为“在海平面之上”。

新3 Lesson 34 happy discovery

A truly dedicated searcher for art treasures must have patience, and above all, the ability 

to recognize the worth of something when he sees it.

这是above另一基本含义“of greater importance or of higher quality than sb/sth”的常见词组above all,意为“最重要的事，尤其是”。用这个基本意思，我们可以再造一个句子：

I rate her above most other players of her age.

Above的第三个基本含义为“more than sth; greater in number, level or age than sb/st”（数量，水平，年龄等超过），例如：

Temperature has been above average.

Above还有一个比较巧妙的用法，例如：

She is not above lying when it suits her.

以及“Becoming Jane”里面也有一个例子：But you are above being pleased.

在这里，above意为“too good or too honest or too proud to do sth”(不屑于,不至于做某事)。

那么above作为副词以及形容词的用法也是很常见，老师就不赘述，举几个简单例子：

A long scream sounded from somewhere above. （副词）

从上面什么地方传来一声长长的尖叫。

Banks have been charging 25 percent and above for unsecured loans. （副词）

银行一直以来对无担保贷款收取25%或更高的费用。

Several conclusions could be drawn from the results described above. （副词）

几个结论可从上述的那些结果中得出。

For a copy of their brochure, write to the above address. （形容词）

欲取得一份他们的宣传手册, 写信到上述地址。

下面，我们就来比较一下over和above的一些区别吧： 

(1) over和above都可以表示“在…上方”。两个物体是互不接触的。比如： 

There is a picture above/over the fireplace.壁炉上有一张画。 

Can you see the helicopter above/over the palace？你能看见宫殿上方的那架直升机吗？ 

(2) over也可表示 “在…之上”，两个物体互相接触，有on 和 cover 的意思，而above不能这样用 

He put his handkerchief over his face.他用手帕把脸蒙了起来。（不能用above） 

She spread a cloth over the table.她把一块布铺在桌子上。（不能用above） 

（3）如果要表示“越过”、“翻过”和“飞过”的意思，通常用over。而above多用于表示一种静态的“在…上方”的意思。 

If we can’t go over the mountain, we must go round it. 要是我们无法翻过这座山，我们只能绕山而行。

（4）above与over都有“more than”的意思，然而above is used in relation to a minimum level or a fixed point (above与最低限度或某固定点关联)，例如：Temperature will not rise above zero tonight. 而over is used with numbers, ages, money and time,例如： He is over 50. We waited over 2 hours.
