昂立外语【新概念培训】分享drill这个小词。在我们新概念三Lesson 40 Who’s who的课文中出现了这个生词：

When a student recently saw two workmen using a pneumatic drill outside his university, he immediately telephoned the police and informed them that two students dressed up as workmen were tearing up the road with a pneumatic drill.

这篇课文讲述了大学生喜欢恶作剧，有个学生看见两个工人在大学校门外用风钻干活，马上打电话报告警察，说有两个学生扮成工人，正在用风钻破坏路面。课文中的drill显然是一个名词，表示a tool or machine with a pointed end for making holes“钻孔机”。drill其实在我们新概念二的课文中也出现过哦，小朋友还记得吗，Lesson 88 Trapped in a mine 中有这样一句话Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine.这里的drill是作为动词“钻孔”解释。那除此之外，drill还有什么其他含义吗，让我们来看一下下面这段话：

So now when my mother presented her tests, I performed listlessly, my head propped on one arm. I pretended to be bored. And I was. I got so bored that I started counting the bellows of the foghorns out on the bay while my mother drilled me in other areas. At last she was beginning to give up hope. 

该段话选自于著名的美籍华裔作家Amy Tan（谭恩美）的引起轰动的处女作《喜福会》（The Joy Luck Club）中的一则故事Two kinds，作者通过讲述一些家庭小事反映出要强的母亲那“望女成凤”的急切心态。而“我”已对此感到厌倦，想要摆脱束缚做回自己，因此当我母亲训练我其他方面的能力时，我烦到开始数屋外海湾上的雾角声。这段话中的drill显而易见是一个动词，表示“训练”，尤其是指通过反复操练，to teach students, sports players etc by making them repeat the same lesson, exercise etc many times。比如说，对学生进行英语语法训练，我们就可以说to drill students in English grammar~
