The strike is due to begin on Tuesday.（strike : n. 罢工)

这两篇课文里给到的是strike一词最为常见的用法，作动词表示：“敲击”，名词表示：“罢工”。

其实strike的用法很多，我们看看名作家们是怎么用它的呢？ 

下面两段话出自英国女作家Charlotte Brontë的代表作 Jean Eyre.

She never saw him strike or heard him to abuse me, though he did both now and then 

in her very presence, more frequently, however, behind her back.

He might strike her dead in the midst of her tantrums, and then where would she go?

第一句中，she指代收养Jean的Mrs. Reed，她纵容自己的儿子John欺凌Jean，即使John经常当着她的面打Jean，她也装作没看见、没听见。第二句He指God，Mrs. Reed家的女仆威胁Jean，如果她不听从管教，上帝会惩罚她，在她发脾气的时候（in the midst of her tantrums）杀死她。

第一句很好理解，strike就相当于hit，意思是打，击，撞，如头撞上了墙，我们可以说strike one’s head against the wall. 第二句话中如果你不知道strike sb dead这个短语的意思，恐怕理解起来会有一些误差，比如理解为“敲击致死”，还是把strike理解hit，而事实上strike sb dead的意思就是“杀死某人”。
