In the end, I could not bear it. I turned around again.

这儿的bear 不再是名词“熊”，而是动词“忍受、容忍”，相当于“stand”。bear表“容忍”,它的形容词是bearable，即“可容忍的”。在日常英语中，人们一般说can’t stand，而不说can’t bear: I could’ t stand the noise any longer.英文中“生孩子”我们常用的是“give birth to”,其实较为正式的生孩子说法就是“bear”,bear a child/son/daughter。而事实上bear这个词意思还有很多。我们来看看名作家们是怎么用它的。    

下面两段话出自英国女作家Charlotte Brontë的代表作 Jean Eyre.

But Bessie ,as soon as she had dressed her young ladies, used to take herself off to the lively regions of the kitchen and housekeeper’s room, generally bearing the candle along with her.

读到这儿，相信你大概能猜出bear在这儿的意思了吧，Mrs. Reed家的仆人Bessie在为Mrs. Reed的两个孩子穿戴好衣服后，总会去到厨房和门卫室，bearing这儿是用分词做状语，表示拿着蜡烛。所以这儿的bear相当于carry，表示“携带”。比如参加朋友的婚礼，一般会提前准备好礼物，“The wedding guests arrived, bearing gifts.”

另外给大家补充一下bear在阅读中最常见的意思，即“have feelings”怀着某种感情。如It’s an accident .I don’t bear any grudges. “bear sb. a grudge” 指对某人怀恨在心。
