1. 新二 Lesson39 ( Am I all right? )—— When the doctor answered the phone, Mr Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr John Gilbert.  (certain：adj. 某个)

2. 新二Lesson 43 ( Over the South Pole )——At one point, it seemed certain that the air plane would crash.(certain adj. 肯定的)

Certain一般情况下作形容词，但是如上例子，意思完全不一样。

1. 某些，某几个 

A certain man will visit you tomorrow. 明天某人将探访你。

A certain Mr Brown telephoned while you were out。 你出去的时候，一个叫布朗先生的人打电话来了。

To a certain extent, I'm in favor of your project. 从某种程度上说,我赞成你的方案。

注：certain不一定只跟单数。如：

Certain of those present had had too much to drink. 有些出席的人喝得太多了。

Certain things are not openly spoken about. 有些事是不能公开说的。

2. 确定的

One thing is certain - she won't give up the money willingly. 有一点是肯定的——她不会心甘情愿地放弃这一笔钱。

I can't say for certain how long I'll be there.  我说不准我在那儿会呆多久。

I don't know for certain if she's coming. 我不能肯定她是否会来。

近义词辨析：

certain, some 

Some和certain都表示“某个”时，some后面跟可数名词单数，不加冠词，表“某个”强调不知道、不了解，而certain则是说话人了解不便说而已，后面可以加复数。

如 A certain boy/Two certain boys called you. 一/两个男孩给你打过电话了。

 Some girl knocked at your door while you were out. 你外出的时候，有个女孩敲过门。
