今天我们来讲sheer这个词。这一词在新概念三册Lesson 47 Too high a price?中首次出现：

We keep trying all four methods, but the sheer volume of rubbish we produce worldwide threatens to overwhelm us.

这里的sheer volume指的是净含量，sheer单独拿出来意思是纯粹的，不参杂的。

形容词的sheer除了这个解释之外，牛津词典中还有如下解释：

1. very steep   eg. sheer cliffs/slopes

2. (of cloth, etc.) thin, light and almost transparent

e.g. sheer nylon

在The Great Gatsby中有这样一段：

He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray.

这段话中的sheer应该用第2种解释，翻译过来是：他拿出一堆衬衫，开始一件一件扔在我们面前，薄麻布衬衫、厚绸衬衫、细法兰绒衬衫都抖散了，五颜六色摆满了一桌。

sheer形容材质的轻薄。

sheer还可以做副词，意思为：straight up or down。如：

The cliffs rise sheer from the beach.
