在Webster字典中的解释为：

作为 n.  (C&U)

1. work done by the mind or body : energy used to do sth. 努力

e.g.   It wasn't easy, but it was worth the effort.

事情不易，但值得一搏。

Our success is due to the combined/concerted efforts of many    people.

concerted/joint efforts   共同努力 （口译词汇）

我们的成功归功于很多人共同努力。

Our efforts turned out in vain.

我们的努力到头来白费了。

在表达“努力”时，常使用下列词组：

make an/every/no effort to do sth.

He made no effort to hide his feelings.

他一点也不刻意隐藏情绪。

I had to make every effort not to laugh.

我竭尽全力不笑出来。

The school makes every effort to help new students become adjusted to college life. 

学校竭尽全力帮助新生适应大学生活。

在表示目的时，也可以使用词组：

in an effort to do…

In an effort to avoid further delays, the delivery process has been simplified.

为了避免更多延误，送货过程已得到精简。

形近词：

effect  n. 作用，效果

have an effect on… 对…产生影响  an和effect中间可以加adj.

Singing English songs has a good effect on the language learning.

写作中当表达“竭尽全力做某事”时，大家第一反应就是try one’s best to do这样“地球人都知道”的语言，如果想让表达上“不落窠臼”表达新意，抓住阅卷老师的眼球，就要“去粗取精”用更地道复杂的结构替代之。
