Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I’d like to thank you for inviting me to make some comments on the subject of juvenile crime.

It is obvious that one of the causes of juvenile crime is an unsatisfactory home background. The father or even sometimes both parents may be involved in some form of criminal activity, and this inevitably has a serious impact on the growing child. The child takes conflict with the authorities for granted. The parents may be on bad terms with each other or even get divorced and this puts a great emotional strain on children.

Another cause of teenage crime may be boredom or discontent. Some spoilt middle-class youths regard themselves as revolutionaries of society. They find a certain fulfillment in robbing banks and shops, taking part in gang wars.

Loneliness and alienation in our schools are not new. President Bush called the shooting at the high school in California “a disgraceful act”. I think the shooting is a desperate cry for help. Many “young shooters” are indeed isolated, bullied and humiliated at schools.

青少年犯罪的另一个原因可能是出于无聊和不满。一些被宠坏了的中产阶级家庭的青少年把自己视作社会的变革者。通过抢劫银行、商店，参加集体斗殴，他们得到一定的满足。

孤独与疏远在我们的学校里已不是什么新鲜事了。布什总统将发生在加利福尼亚中学里的枪击事件称为“无耻的行为”。我认为那次枪击事件是一种拼命寻求帮助的呼救。很多“校园杀手”确确实实在学校被孤立、欺侮和羞辱。
