In the Time of Queen Elizabeth I

In 1559 Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England. She was young, and she faced problems. England was poor. There was the threat of war with Spain. At home, there was unrest. English citizens clashed over religion.

One of Elizabeth’s first acts was to make the Church of England the state church . She then worked to keep England out of war. Spain was rich, and it had lands in the New World. Elizabeth sent sailors to pirate Spanish ships. As Spain’s ships sailed from the New World, the English robbed them. This brought wealth to England. It put off war with Spain, as Spain had to have money to wage war. Later Spain sent its ships to attack England. The English ships defeated them.

Elizabeth reigned until her death in 1603. She made England rich and strong. Her reign was a time of world discovery. She sent the first English settlers to the New World. The colonies gave Britain greater power in the world. Elizabeth’s reign was a time of rebirth of the arts. Literature and art flourished. The era was called the Renaissance. It began in Italy and spread to England. Elizabeth’s court was a place where writers, musicians and scholars worked. William Shakespeare wrote his plays at this time. Elizabeth’s reign is called the Golden Age of English history.
