在备考托福过程中，一提到词汇量，同学们往往都会尤其关注阅读词汇(reading vocabulary), 常常无意识地弱化了对于积极词汇(active vocabulary)的积累。英语中，人们常常用同义词或近义词替代上文出现过的词，以求避免用词重复、体现文采，这种语言现象被称作求雅变异(elegant variation)。运用近义词不仅可以体现雅致的文风，还有利于加强段落的统一性和连贯性。那么今天，我们就来学习一些在托福写作过程中可以排上大用场的小词汇。

以一个简单的句子“如果青少年经常看电视，他们就会有受到一些负面影响”为例，

学生们通常会说：If teenagers watch too much TV, they will be negatively influenced.

此处的too much可换为frequent/excessive/prolonged来表达类似的语境义。

整个句子则可修改为：Frequent exposure to TV can exert negative influence on teenagers.

再以下面这段范文为例：Would you feel happy when given an additional 10% pay raise? Would you feel excited

 when earning generous prizes in competing in a TV show? Would you feel ecstatic when 

getting 1,000 dollar by winning the lottery?

作者在谈快乐时分别使用了happy/ excited/ ecstatic，通过近义词之间的转换避免了语言单调的问题。可见写作替换词的重要性。
