昂立外语【新概念培训】分享expect这个小词。在我们新概念二Lesson 7 Too late课文中有这样一句话：

They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa.

他们正期待从南非来的一个装着钻石的贵重包裹。

这里的expect的意思大家应该很熟悉了，没错就是期待、等待，它的结构也信手拈来：expect sth./ expect sb to do sth.接下来，让我们一起来看看下面新闻报道中出现的expect作何解释。大家对威廉王子和凯特王妃一定不陌生，11年那场英国皇家世纪婚礼历历在目，而在2014年下半年，凯特王妃又怀了二胎，收到了媒体和民众的广泛关注，Reuters路透社这样写道：

William, grandson of Queen Elizabeth and second-in-line to the throne, announced last month that Kate was expecting a second baby to join Prince George who was born in July last year, but no date for the birth was disclosed at the time.

这里的expect如果解释为期待、等待似乎也很说得通，但其实并不精准，因为这样的解释并没有表现出已经怀有身孕这一状态，那究竟该如何理解最好呢？Webster上有这样一条释义：to be pregnant; await the birth of one's child—used in progressive tenses，也就是说，be expecting可以表示怀孕，或者期待（婴儿）出生的意思。在最近还有一个很轰动的新闻，就是中国网球女王李娜怀孕了！那我们是不是就可以把expect的这个用法用起来了呢，Li Na is expecting a baby~

其实expect的这一用法在我们新概念三的课本中也有出现，就是Lesson 45 The power of the press这篇课文，那一大家子已经有了五个孩子，没想到第六胎一生就是一五胞胎，They were expecting their sixth child and were faced with even more pressing economic problems.
